Learn How to Check the Oil Level in a Car

Checking the oil level in a car is quite simple. Some newer vehicles have electronic oil monitors that don’t use traditional dipsticks. If your car does not have an electronic oil monitor, you will need to check the oil manually:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is parked on level ground. The engine should be off and cold.
  2. Pop open the hood to find the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe any oil from the end of it.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick all the way back into its tube. Take it out once more and inspect both sides to see where the oil level falls.

If there is not enough oil, you will need to add more. Check your owner’s manual to see what grade of oil is needed. Remove the oil filler cap and carefully add oil a little at a time until the dipstick indicates you’ve reached the correct amount.

Can You Check Oil When the Car is Hot?

A common question we hear is, “Can you check oil when the car is hot?” For most vehicles, you will want to wait until the car has cooled down before you check the oil level. This way, you will not burn yourself on a hot engine part. For some vehicles, it is recommended that you allow the vehicle to warm up a bit before checking the oil level. Be sure to check your owner’s manual to see what is recommended by the automaker.

Why Checking the Oil Level in a Car is Important

Having the correct amount of oil is absolutely essential to your vehicle’s performance. You should change the oil in your vehicle at least twice a year. This task may be necessary more often based on your driving habits around Westfield and beyond. You should check the oil level at least once a month to ensure there are no leaks in the system. If you notice your car’s hood is hot to the touch or steam billowing out from under the hood, an oil leak may be causing it to overheat.
